Friends & Neighbors,

Just a brief report on tonight’s Board of Aldermen meeting:

Property Tax Rate Set for 2017

As required by Missouri Law, the Board set the tax rate for real and tangible personal property after conducting a public hearing.  The rate for 2017 is 10.54 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, reduced from last year’s rate of 10.58 cents.  Four years ago the tax rate was 11.5 cents.  The reason for the reduction in rate is the forecasted increase in total property tax revenue due to the 2017 increase in property values declared by the County Assessor and due to the increase in population and housing units in Dardenne Prairie.  Under the provisions of the Missouri Constitution the City can’t enhance its revenue beyond certain modest limits without the consent of the voters.  In order to stay below those limits we needed to reduce the tax rate.  Dardenne Prairie has the lowest property tax rate of any city in St. Charles County (except Weldon Spring which has no property tax at all).

Report on the Proposition P Open House

Mat DeWinters, our Parks and Recreation Coordinator, briefed the Board on the public’s feedback to the City at last week’s Open House Meeting.  We are holding a second Open House Meeting on Thursday, September 21 at 7:00 PM at City Hall (2032 Hanley Road).  If you would like to learn more about Prop P or you want to tell us what kind of recreational activities and programs you want the City to provide please come to the meeting.  We expect to schedule another meeting or two in October.   Prop P asks the voters to raise the retail sales tax by one half cent.  Proceeds from that half cent would be reserved for parks and storm water programs.  We are considering building a community center on land presently owned by the City at the SE corner of Highway N and Post Road.  We don’t want to spend the City’s money developing detailed plans until we know if the public supports the tax.  If the Prop P passes on November 7 we will engage the public even further to determine what the park and/or community center would look like and what kinds of activities would be provided there.  If Prop P is rejected we will not proceed with development of the new park.

Prairie Day is this Saturday, September 23.

Come join us at City Hall, City Hall Park and the adjoining Ball Fields for Prairie Day 2017.  The fun starts at Noon.  Activities, food trucks, games, shows, crafts, and vendors!!!  At 6:00 the band Contagious goes on stage and will play til  10:00.  At about 8:30 the band will break and we will have a spectacular fireworks show.  Please be aware that the portion of Hanley Road in front of City Hall will be blocked and traffic will be detoured.  Please observe the signs that guide you.

Next Board Meeting

The next meeting of the Board of Aldermen is Wednesday, October 4 beginning at 6:00 PM at City Hall.  Come see your City Government at work.
